Dear Santa,
Surely I’m on your “nice” list this year. As such, here is a little note to help you figure out what I'd like to unwrap on Christmas morning.

If you could, please remove my little New York City apartment’s oven and have your elves install this La Cornue CornuFé Stove. And remember, I LOVE the aquamarine blue option with the polished copper trim.

Should the stove not be sleigh-friendly, any of the Leif serveware pieces would make delightful stocking stuffers, but especially the Glitter Tart Server. If I can’t have Dorothy’s glittery ruby slippers or Rudolph’s shiny nose, at least I can have these fanciful tart servers. Check out the super-saturated acrylic options, too!

This artichoke lamp is the perfect thing for the dark, scary corner in my living room. Next year, your cookies will bask in its glow (pink, please!).

Oh, and one more thing! I always wear an apron. By this time of year, mine are tattered and torn. Isn't this Lukrecja model by COOKie to die for? I'm sure I'd be jostled and pushed a little less at the market in that little number.

GIFTS: Charlotte's Little Box of Bad

Ennis Food Stylist, Charlotte Omnès offers up a fun & fabulous idea for gifting her sinfully delicious treats!

This year, like most, I like to give the gift of something edible and so delectable it’s downright naughty. Don’t worry, I won’t tell Santa. Instead you get the low down on making MY LITTLE BOX OF BAD.
This year’s little box of bad will include individually wrapped Sea Salt Caramels, Boozy Truffles and Hot Chili Marmalade, perfect for smearing on crackers and topping with a creamy Triple Crème Cheese such as Délice de Bourgogne. Here are the recipes I plan to use, merely as a guideline because I like to cook from the cuff and encourage experimentation.

Sea Salt Caramels
This is a great recipe from Gourmet ©2004 that I’ve made, many times before. Be sure your caramel cooks all the way to 248°F so it gets firm enough to cut when cool. Try using different types of sea salt to create a “box of chocolates” effect so each caramel has a little different look and taste.

Boozy Truffles
Leave it to my friend Zac Young to create a ganache recipe that is barely holding together due to the alcohol content. A couple of these and you will be under the tree. Try using different liqueurs such as Grand Mariner, Peppermint Schnapps or even bourbon! For the sake of time (because I have a lot of these to make) I’m going to chill the ganache, roll it out in cocoa powder to about 1/2” thick then cut it into squares. The fun part will be how you choose to decorate. I’m a fan of edible spray paints, glitter and dragees. Use your imagination and make them wild! Hot Chili Marmalade
Now, I’ve made a lot of jam, jelly and marmalade but never embarked with the hot pepper business. I seem to always end up with chilies from shoots and this year I thought it would be just the perfect thing to go in my little box of bad. For this recipe I’ll be consulting my collection of tried and true antique cookbooks for a good marmalade recipe then I’ll put my chili twist to it.
THE AMERICAN WOMAN’S COOKBOOK © 1944
Originally property of my grandmother, Harriet
~~Carrot~~ Hot Chili Marmalade

6 ~~carrots~~ 1 tablespoon various hot chilies (or more if you dare)
3 oranges
1 lemon
Sugar, about 4 cups

Slice or chop chilies [WASH YOUR HANDS!!!] Slice oranges very thin and add juice and grated rind of lemon. Combine chilies and fruit, measure and add 2/3 as much sugar, [about 4 cups]. Heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Cook rapidly until think and clear. Pour into clean hot glasses and seal with paraffin. Makes 6 (6-ounce) jars.

Ok, so this recipe isn’t exactly how I would write it so feel free to use other marmalade recipes and add the hot peppers. No matter what the outcome, you’ll have a great holiday condiment perfect for adding a little zing to cheese, ham or poultry.

MY BEST CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES
Adapted from “Baking: From My Home to Yours” by Dorie Greenspan
2 C. all-purpose flour
1 ¼ tsp. salt
¾ tsp. baking soda
2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 C. granulated sugar
2/3 C. light brown sugar
2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
2 large eggs
12 oz. bittersweet chocolate, cut into chunks
1 C. chopped walnuts or pecans (*or peanuts!)
-Preheat oven to 375˚F. Place rack in center.
-Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper (not wax paper!).
-Whisk together flour + salt + baking soda.
-In the bowl of a stand mixer beat butter on medium speed one minute till smooth, then add both sugars and beat an additional two minutes, till well blended.
-Beat in vanilla extract, followed by the eggs, one at a time, beating approximately one minute after each addition to ensure complete incorporation.
-Reduce speed to low and add flour mixture in three portions.
-Mix in chocolate and nuts.
-Spoon the dough by slightly rounded tablespoonfuls on the baking sheets, leaving about 2” between them.
-Bake one sheet at a time, rotating halfway through baking, 10 – 12 minutes.
-Cool on rack.

A Sweet Alternative

Style School: Halloween Makeup

ENNIS Makeup Artist, Heidi Wells shows you how to quickly transform yourself, a friend or your child into a "Granny" for Halloween. Fast, fun, and inexpensive!

What you will need:

Dark brown colored concealer
A very light ivory concealer both in a solid (pot or tube) not liquid
Two liquid foundations - a very dark shade, and one in the appropriate shade for the model
Translucent loose powder
Super light concealer or a "clown white" make up
A few small flat foundation brushes of varying sizes
Two very small eyeliner bushes
A fluffy eyeshowdow brush/ or small blush brush
Dark brown matt eyeshadow
An old tooth brush
Pink matt finish lipstick

A wig, glasses and a dress from the thrift store will complete the look.

TO START
Use a matching foundation and apply to the entire face paying careful attention to the lips and eyes. Set with loose powder to create a blank canvas. Use white make up to cover the eyebrows.
Begin the aging by asking your model to run through a range of exaggerated expressions to see where you need "wrinkles" (or if on yourself use the mirror).

Use the brown shadow and fluffy brush to shadow larger areas in and around the eye socket, in the hollow of the cheeks and shadow under the bottom lip.

DEEP WRINKLES
Start at the top and work down. Raise eyebrows and use your fine eyeliner brush and dark concealer to draw dark lines in the creases. Eyes shut tight will give you guidelines for "crows feet" at the corners of the eyes. A huge open mouth will give you placement for the lines connecting the nose and mouth. Pursed lips will provide a bunch of small lines around the mouth. Make the lip "lines" extend into the lip itself- to minimize the fullness of the actual lip. Don't for get the neck. A clenched jaw will show you the right place to accentuate the cords in the neck- and semi circle lines across the neck, will give the appearance of wrinkles.
When you have completed all the wrinkles go over each one with the light highlighter concealer. Make a slightly wider line of highlight right next to the dark line. This will give dimension to the creases.

AGE SPOTS

When you are happy with the wrinkles finish off with a spray of dark foundation. Dip the tooth brush in your darkest foundation, have your model close their eyes and using your thumb pull the bristles back and let them go about 2 inches from the skin. This creates a bunch of very realistic and randomly placed age spots.

FINISH THE LOOK
Lastly, put a very thin line of lipstick on the innermost part of the lips. This will create the illusion of thin lips... and maybe add some on the teeth - just like great grandma!

This Halloween collect your favorite sweets in style - make your own little pumpkin a Sneaky Cat Sack...

Materials

1 large pillow case
felt fabric in black, yellow, orange
fabric glue
sewing machine or needle and thread
ribbon

Directions

Turn pillowcase inside out. Line the top with a 4' long piece of ribbon, fold the top over the ribbon and sew in place to create a drawstring.
Turn the pillowcase right side out and cut shapes of the cat's face, ears and eyes out of felt
Glue the face onto the bag and allow to dry.

Everyday Fashion - Fall 2011

Fashion can be overwhelming sometimes. With all of the fashion shows, various stores, endless merchandise, and magazine recommendations, it can be hard to figure out what pieces to buy for each new season.
To simplify your options, I recommend choosing your favorite trend within four key wardrobe categories: Color. Texture. Pattern. Accessories.
However, not all of the fashion sent down the runways is appropriate for use on your daily errands, at work, or for lounging on the weekend. That's why I have put together this edited list of Fall 2011 trends that you can take from the runways and wear in your everyday.

Color

One of the easiest ways to update your wardrobe each season is to buy a key item in the IT color. This fall season you have a choice: ketchup or mustard? Reds of all shades will provide you with an instant update, but be sure to choose the right one for your skin tone. Wear Heinz-ketchup red or the deep burgundy of your favorite red wine. If you are not into shades of red, mustard is a fabulous and unexpected choice. Mustard also brings some pleasing gold tones to skin as your summer tan fades for the winter. Luckily, the colorblocking trend is still going strong post-summer. Both red and mustard hues work well incorporated into a colorblock look. Still unsure? Texture

One of the easiest ways to add visual interest to an outfit without adding visual clutter is with texture, especially if you've chosen to rock a monochromatic look. This season, there are two trends that will automatically add texture to your fall outfit.

--> Lace.

Opt for an all lace dress or a delicate blouse. Channel the Victorian era and look for simple long sleeves and/ or a romantic high neck. Another way to incorporate lace into your wardrobe is through accessories. Choose a vintage glove or carry a pretty clutch. You could also pair a lace pump with your favorite cocktail dress during the holidays.

--> Leather.

Nothing says luxury like a buttery soft leather. Plus, it's nice and warm! Choose a leather skirt and pair it with your favorite sweater. Or finally ditch those black leggings and pick up a pair of skinny leather pants. Think outside of the box and look for a color other than black or check out items made in another fabric with leather details like this dress. You could also dig out your old leather jacket and breathe new life into it. Your wallet will thank you.

This jacket is a great piece because it covers two fall trends. The color is in line with the new season and the leather is cut in a modern silhouette. Throw it on over your lace or mustard colored dress!

The best part about these two textured trends is that they work with a feminine or edgy look depending on what you put together. Just be sure to avoid head-to-toe lace or head-to-toe leather; it's overkill.

Pattern
There is something so cozy about plaid. The pattern is the unofficial dress code for an autumn trip to the farm or back to school. Flannel, wool, and cashmere varieties make me want to curl up with a hot beverage on a rainy day. You should find ways to reinvent this trend beyond your old flannel shirt. A tartan dress or checked pants are an instant wardrobe update, just make sure the pants are fitted so you avoid looking like you are running around in old pajamas! A tailored blazer in plaid will take you from work to errands effortlessly. I also love this go anywhere plaid scarf at Madewell for an off-duty weekend look.

makes 2 pounds Recipe developed by RussellOrchards owner Miranda Russell. This is a really simple recipe to execute, andthe results are delightful. It’s a great beginner recipe for pickling novices,and a welcome relief from all that equipment and process for the hard-corepickling veteran.

2 tsp. blackpeppercorns 

1½ c. vinegar 

1 c. water 

1 c. sugar

3 tbsp. koshersalt 

2 tsp. dill seed

1 medium onion,peeled and sliced 

2 lbs. picklingcucumbers,peeled and sliced 

1 bunch dill

Sterilize andkeep hot four one-pint jars with tight-fitting lids. Put black peppercorns,vinegar, water, sugar, kosher salt, and dill seed in a saucepan and bring toa boil. Meanwhile, divide onion, cucumber, and dill among the four jars andpack the vegetables tightly into them. Pour hot liquid into the jars, coveringthe vegetables and filling to just below the lid. Evenwomen who never had acne as an adolescent can start breaking out around hermouth and chin. Below is one of a series of solutions to taking years off your skin that I will be posting!

Overly “made up”skin.

Solution:

Here is a great method forhiding age spots and skin discoloration.

On a clean and moisturized face, use a small pointed brush to dip intoconcealer and apply the product on the exact spots that you want to hide.
Useyour ring finger to tap gently into the skin. If you have a larger area that needs coverage (such as underthe eyes), rub a small amount of concealer on your finger, place on the pad ofyour undereye, and roll gently to blend.
Use a small eyeshadow brush dipped in translucentpowder to set.

Switch from a heavyfoundation or powder to a tinted moisturizer, and apply with your fingers. Or,try a serum foundation.

What a difference a day makes... yesterday (Labor Day), glorious beach weather, today gray, chilly and fall-like. Just in time Callista Wilson offers a cute "how-to" go from warm September days to cool nights with a simple scarf trick.

Transitioning from summer to fall can be tricky since the weather is often somewhat unpredictable. During the day you might be fine in your summer dress but come evening, you'll want to throw on a layer. It can be annoying to carry around a cardigan or jacket all day, so try this easy trick!

During the day wear a large square drapey scarf tied into a triangle and knotted once in a loose loop. It will almost look like a necklace, or the cowl of a shirt. We love this soft thin wool scarf from Madewell, and silk works well for this too. When it gets cooler, tie it more snugly around your neck bandana-style, wear it around your shoulders like a shawl with the ends loose, or tuck the ends up on either shoulder like a collar. Voila!

A New York City heat wave can be brutal, and with crowded subways and gross garbage lingering from last Tuesday- a girl just needs a break! So although reading these Top 5 Ways to Stay Cool will not in fact make you feel less sticky or uncomfortable, it will give you some refreshing insight on how to dress cooler and still look oh –so stylish. ~ Annie Nicholas

1. BACKLESS:
There is nothing like a cool breeze on a hot day- or ANY breeze for that matter! And we all know that a hot NYC day is a wardrobe gamble, so why not double your chances of a refreshing visit by exposing some more than just your arms and legs. Back baring dresses and tops are all the rage this summer and from cutouts to criss-cross, you can be sure find to style that fits your body type.

2. TEE-SHIRT MAXI:
Shorts and tee’s are a no-brainer on a hot summer day- but who needs shorts?! Ladies, when it’s 1000’ on the subway platform you don’t want hot denim sticking to your legs. This summer, the Jersey Tee maxi dress is a must- it’s comfy and casual like your favorite tee or tank, and it’s one and done! These jersey dresses are everywhere at any price point, and with a rainbow of colors to choose from in that classic cotton jersey we love, it’s a summer must have.

3. CROP TOP:
(Less is) More ways to stay cool this summer: crop tops! I mean, who wouldn’t want to wear half a shirt while running errands in packed Soho? Well, for those (like me) who aren’t all blessed with six-pack abs, it doesn’t mean this style trend isn’t for you. It’s the idea of having a shorter hem line in front that helps to show case our high waisted shorts and skirts. But, if the crop is still too belly bearing for you, try the new ‘Hi-Lo’. It’s when the shirt is high in the front and lower in the back. These styles provide more coverage and look fab layered over tanks or solo.

4. SHEER LAYERS:
Ok! To the ladies wearing jeans on the packed subway with no A/C- WE KNOW YOUR HOT! And I am not just referring to your looks; you must be sweating with all those clothes on! I get it though, some women just don’t feel comfortable leaving home in shorts but I have your solution! (So take those pants off!) Sheers, “sheer bliss” as I am calling them this summer, are available in skirts, tops, dresses and even pants. Now don’t worry, while they have a “see thru” factor, all your lovely lady parts are covered up!
It’s like wearing a normal cotton skirt or short, with a little extra lightweight layer on top. They are super chic, and with lush fabrics like silk and lace, they can be worn day or night! Problem solved. (Your welcome hot subway lady!)

5. EYE WEAR AND HATS:
It’s an obvious rule, but I have seen some squinty and sunburn fashionistas forget to follow! Now more than ever, wearing a hat ‘a top’ your ensemble is so chic and trendy, and with every designer turning them out there is no excuse not to snatch one up. As for eyewear, sunglasses are a great accessory to update every season so don’t worry about spending a lot of money! Treat your eyes to a fresh summer pair, like a cat-eyed shape- it’s this year’s Wayfarer. So next time you head out, put them together and protect your skin and eyes from the sun. Harsh UV rays are NEVER in style.

Keepsake Summer

Ennis stylist Caroline Woodward shares her lovely way for displaying keepsakes from summer adventures.

Summer is here! I hope you are all enjoying the hot weather. You may be planning a trip to the beach or the woods, but wherever you are going, summer is the time to get outside and explore nature. If you are at all like me, you will probably end up with pockets full of keepsakes. Shells to beautiful to leave on the beach, feathers found on walks through the woods, interesting polished stones plucked from the bed of a river.

All these things are lovely, but when the vacation is over and you return to your real life, it can be hard to incorporate them into your home. My family and I recently traveled to the southern coast of England, and our daughters were just fascinated by the stones we found there. Flint cobbles wash up on the beaches the way quahog shells do in Rhode Island, where we live year round. So we ended up with a good rock collection, along with some fallen leaves and things we collected as we walked through Ashdown Forest, a 500-acre preserve where A.A. Milne’s son Christopher played as a boy, which became the setting for the stories of Winnie the Pooh. At the end of the trip we had a lovely collection of things, which deserved a lovely display of some sort.

What we did when we returned home was to place the collections in old mason jars and hang them up in the girls’ bedroom window with a pretty white ribbon. Hanging them in the window keeps the jars from becoming annoying clutter on a desktop, and the light coming through the window looks beautiful coming through all the organic shapes. Since then we’ve done other jars, to commemorate other things. My favorite is the one we made when we moved from our house by the beach earlier this year. We filled the jar with shells, sea glass and feathers to keep as a reminder of that particular beach which was a treasure trove of sea glass and interesting pottery shards. Local lore has it that the broken pottery is a result of the hurricane of 1938, during which an entire beachfront hotel fell into the bay. Many of the shards are clearly from that era so it makes sense to me. Some of the glass bottles even have dates on them that confirm the theory. Either way, the beach provided many interesting artifacts, and I’m glad we got to take just one jarful with us when we moved.

So don’t hold back when beachcombing this year! Bring home those treasures and make yourself a beautiful memento to remind you of your vacation throughout the year.

Downton L.A. Dog
Makes 8 hot dogs

Notes: Use your favorite brand of hot dogs and bacon for this recipe. Secret ingredient: cornstarch! It acts like glue and keeps the bacon form peeling off the hot dogs while they grill.

Optional garnishes: sliced radishes, lime wedges, hot sauce (I prefer Valentina), and crema or queso fresco

8 hot dogs
½ cup cornstarch
8 bacon strips
4 ripe avocados, pitted, peeled, and cut into ½-inch dice
Juice of 2 limes
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
2 cups tightly packed cilantro leaves, chopped
½ cup mint leaves, finely chopped
¼ cup minced white onion
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 ripe beefsteak tomato, seeded and cut into ½-inch dice
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 jalapeño peppers
¼ cup vegetable oil
½ cup mayonnaise
8 hot dog buns

- Heat grill.

- Place cornstarch in shallow bowl. Roll each hot dog in cornstarch, shaking off excess. Wrap each hot dog with one strip of bacon; set aside.

- To make the guacamole: Lightly mash the avocado in medium bowl with a fork—some chunks should remain. Add lime juice, vinegar, cilantro, mint, onion, garlic, and tomato and lightly stir to combine. Season to taste with salt and pepper; set aside.

- Brush jalapeños with oil and grill until charred. Lightly oil grill and arrange hot dogs in single layer. Cook until bacon is cooked through and lightly charred, turning with tongs as necessary.

- Chop 2 of the charred jalapeños and stir into guacamole. To serve, spread inside of hot dog buns with mayonnaise, tuck in hot dogs, and top with guacamole. Serve with optional garnishes (See Notes) and remaining charred jalapeños.

All-American Dog
Makes 8 hot dogs

Notes: Use your favorite brand of hot dogs and BBQ sauce for this recipe. And od course, you can use homemade macaroni-and-cheese instead of store-bought.
Optional garnishes and sides: pickles, mustard, potato chips or fries

1 (7.25-ounce) box macaroni and cheese
8 hot dogs
¼ cup vegetable oil
2 cups BBQ sauce
8 hot dog buns

- Heat grill.

- Prepare macaroni-and-cheese according to package instructions. Transfer to bowl and cover with foil to keep warm.

- Lightly oil grill and arrange hot dogs in single layer. Cook until hot dogs are cooked through and lightly charred, turning with tongs as necessary.

- To serve, tuck hot dogs into buns and top with generous amounts of BBQ sauce and macaroni-and-cheese.

Phew! It's a hot one and the forecast for the rest of the week looks just as sunny and warm. Enjoy it but keep yourself protected by following the tips below from Ennis' Makeup Stylists & Skin Experts!

From Susan Donoghue:
By this time, most of us know that the effects of too much sun can lead to skin cancer and also wreck havoc on our skin. Besides, it’s no longer in fashion to sport a deep dark tan. Now pale creamy skin is equated with high fashion and beauty. There are so many sunblocks and sunscreens on the market today, it can be confusing knowing which one to buy, so I put together some basic information in the topic.

When choosing a sunscreen, look for broad-spectrum coverage. The sun’s dangerous rays include UVA, which plays role in skin cancer and aging, and UVB, which causes the painful sunburn. The SPF in sunscreen is based on how long it would take you to burn in the sun without sun protection. All skin needs protection, including dark skin. Two or three tablespoons on most of your body applied every two hours will help prevent most sun-related risks.
Now experts are saying that SPF of 30 is sufficient to protect the skin, but it is necessary to follow the two-hour rule. Of course if you are swimming or sweating, the sunscreen needs to be applied more often. Ingredients such as Octisalate, homosalate, Oxybenzone, and Avobenzone are found in many of the chemical-based sunscreens. Titanium dioxide (the thick white cream that lifeguards use) is a physical sunblock—it literally blocks the rays. Some people tend to be sensitive to the chemicals in sunscreen, so it helps to sample them if possible before buying.
Sephora provides small vials of product for the customer to try. However, if you want to go with a less expensive but high performance brand, Consumer Reports recommends No-Ad (broad coverage) SPF 45, Up & Up Sports Continuous Spray 30, and Equate Baby SPF 50. Finding a formula that you like will make it easier to apply it regularly.
My personal favorite is Darphin Vital Protection Anti-Age SPF 50. It’s pricey, but feels like a light moisturizer on the skin. So enjoy the summer—just remember to wear a hat, sunglasses and a good sunscreen!

Being an esthetician I can't say enough how important it is to use sunscreen year round. It really helps to protect the skin... especially to prevent hyperpigmentation, as well as other problems, from showing up as you age! I love the Eminence skin care line sunscreens. There is a tomato sun cream and a tropical vanilla as well. They have spf of 32 and are completely organic - healthy for skin and body. They have a body sunscreen as well. There are a lot of other skincare lines that make a beautiful cream that has sunscreen in it too. I don't recommend using just any cheap drugstore brand on the face, as they tend to cause breakouts. And on another note if you don't have time to get a tan or want to expose your skin to the sun for long enough to get color there are so many lovely bronzing powders and creams to put on your skin to give that glow! Many products have that shimmery glittery effect that looks so sexy and pretty..Love it! Happy Summer!

As for skin sunscreen - if the first ingredient is Zinc Oxide you will have complete coverage up to 4 hrs. Whole Foods has many, 2 being Nature's Gate and Bull Frog. The Z.O. (being the 1st ingredient) makes it water REPELLENT. Bathing suits, now come with UVB & UVA protection, some suits are water repellent which gives added protection, that's if you cover enough skin. These kinds of sunscreen will also protect chemically treated hair.

We are still hard at work, but starting to slip into long weekend/holiday mode over here! Time to think about what you are going to bring to those 4th of July BBQs! Inspired by Charlotte Omnes' lovely styling above, we are going to try out this Epicurious recipe.
Long weekend + watermelon = refreshing for body and soul!

Tomato and Watermelon Salad

3 or 4 small to medium heirloom tomatoes, in assorted colors, cored and cut into 3/4-inch chunks
1 small English or regular cucumber, peeled, seeded, and cut into 3/4-inch cubes
1 cup 3/4-inch-cubed yellow or red seedless watermelon flesh
1 Hass avocado, halved, pitted, peeled, and cut into 3/4-inch cubes
1 tablespoon chopped mixed fresh herbs, in any combination: basil, tarragon, chives, and cilantro
1/4 teaspoon coriander seed
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
3 tablespoons aged balsamic vinegar
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

In a bowl, combine the tomatoes, cucumber, watermelon, avocado, and herbs. In a spice grinder, grind the coriander seeds to a fine powder. Add the ground coriander to the tomato mixture and toss gently.
In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and salt and pepper to taste. Pour over the tomato mixture and toss to coat evenly. Taste and adjust the seasoning before serving.

Because we want to eat local strawberries and bask in the sun (with the appropriate spf of course)! Ennis Food Stylist, Pam Sorin gives us this beautiful image and a recipe for a light and delicious strawberry shortcake.

One of the best things about spring, in my opinion, is all the new beautiful produce that comes to the markets. And of it all, my favorite is local strawberries. Yes, we get strawberries all winter long- but they pale in comparison to the beautiful, sweet, fragrant berries that start popping up in local farmer’s markets, in the Northeast, in June.

They are delicious eaten plain, but I like to jazz them up a bit for my friends and family when I entertain by making a strawberry shortcake. Here’s a really easy one that takes almost no time at all. As a shortcut, I use store-bought phyllo dough instead of shortbread biscuits.

Preheat the oven to 400ºF and line a baking sheet with foil.
Thaw 6 sheets of phyllo.
Working with one sheet at a time, keep the rest of the phyllo under plastic wrap. Brush each sheet with a little melted butter.
Sprinkle with a pinch of sugar, and lightly scrunch the sheet with your fingers, so it becomes crinkled. Repeat with the remaining 5 sheets.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Cool to room temperature.
Hull and halve a pint of strawberries.
Mix them with a tsp of sugar and spoon them over the phyllo.
Top with lightly whipped cream and serve immediately.

Mother's Day Brunch

My mother and both of my grandmothers are extraordinary cooks. The all played a role in teaching me to cook, eat, and love all aspects of food. These recipes, from classic smoked salmon and cream cheese batons to retro ambrosia, are inspired by memories I have of those wonderful women. I hope you share them with the special ones in your life.

Happy Mother’s Day!

SMOKED SALMON BATONS

Serves 6 to 8

1 baguette
8 ounces whipped cream cheese
½ cup dill, finely chopped
2 teaspoons juice and 1 teaspoon finely grated zest from 1 lemon
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
8 ounces smoked salmon
½ English cucumber, thinly sliced

Cut baguette in half crosswise. Cut each half in half lengthwise, then in half again lengthwise to make 8 slim batons.

In medium bowl, combine cream cheese, dill, lemon juice and zest, and salt and pepper to taste.

Spread each baton with lemon-dill cream cheese, then top with salmon and cucumber. Serve.

BACON-LEEK TOURTE

Serves 6 to 8

Notes: I find that the easiest way to wash leeks is to slice them into half-moons as called for in the recipe, then placing them in a salad spinner filled with cold water. After a few minutes, the sediment will settle to the bottom. Lift the leeks out of the water with the spinner basket and repeat process 2 or 3 times until the leeks are free of sediment.

3 tablespoons unsalted butter
All-purpose flour for dusting the work surface
2 sheets (one 17.3-ounce package) Pepperidge Farm frozen puff pastry, thawed according to package instructions
6 slices thick-cut bacon, coarsely chopped
1 ½ pounds leeks, white and pale green parts thinly sliced into half-moons (See Notes)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
12 large eggs, well beaten
1 cup (4 ounces) shredded sharp white cheddar cheese

For egg wash:

2 tablespoons heavy cream
1 egg yolk
Pinch salt

Butter a 9-inch pie plate with 1 tablespoon butter. Dust clean, dry work surface and rolling pin with flour. Roll 1 sheet puff pastry out to about 13- by 12-inches. Place pastry in pie plate, then gently press into bottom and sides. Trim excess with kitchen shears, leaving about 1-inch overhang. Prick pastry all over with tines of fork. Refrigerate.

Dust work surface with additional flour, then, roll out second sheet puff pastry to about 13- by 12-inches Set pastry on a parchment paper-lined cutting board or baking sheet and refrigerate.

Meanwhile, cook bacon in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until crisp, 6 to 8 minutes. With slotted spoon, transfer bacon to paper towel-lined plate. Discard all but 2 tablespoons fat.

Add leeks to now-empty skillet and cook until tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer to plate.

Season with salt and pepper.

Add remaining 2 tablespoons butter to empty skillet. Reduce heat to medium-low. Season eggs salt and pepper. Cook eggs, stirring very frequently with heat-proof rubber spatula, until set but still soft, 5 to 7 minutes. Transfer to plate and cool completely, about 10 minutes.

Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and preheat oven to 375°F. Place one third of eggs in even layer in prepared pie plate. Top with half of bacon, half of leeks, and half of cheese. Top with additional one third of eggs, then remaining bacon, leeks, cheese, and eggs. Top with second puff pastry sheet and trim off excess to match bottom 1-inch overhang. Crimp edges and with sharp knife, cut 4 vent holes on top. Brush with egg wash and bake until puffed and golden, 30 to 35 minutes. Cool to room temperature before serving.

AMBROSIA CUPCAKES

Makes 12 cupcakes

Notes: This recipe is easily doubled.
- Cream of coconut is sweet and thick and can usually be found in the liquor aisle—don’t mistake it for coconut milk. Also, be sure to stir the cream of coconut before using as it often separates in the can.

- Gelatin and cream cheese in the frosting stabilize the whipped cream.

1 cup plus 6 tablespoons cake flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
¾ cup sugar
8 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
½ cup plus 2 tablespoons can cream of coconut (See Notes)
2 large eggs, separated
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup buttermilk
½ teaspoon unflavored gelatin
1 tablespoons water
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
¼ cup confectioners’ sugar
1 cups heavy cream, chilled
¼ cup sweetened flaked coconut
1 cup mini-marshmallows
½ cup canned pineapple chunks, drained and chopped
½ cup mandarin orange wedges, canned or fresh

Adjust oven rack to middle position and preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with liners.

Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in medium bowl; set aside. With mixer fitted with paddle attachment, beat sugar and butter on medium-high speed until light, about 2 minutes. Add ½ cup cream of coconut and beat until fluffy, about 1 minute. Beat in egg yolks and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract.

Reduce speed to low and add reserved flour mixture in 3 additions, alternating with buttermilk. Mix just until combined, scraping sides and bottom of bowl with rubber spatula as needed.

Fit mixer with whisk attachment and place egg whites in clean, dry mixing bowl. Beat whites medium-high speed until stiff peaks form, 3 to 4 minutes. Fold whites into batter.

Fill prepared tins and bake until cake tester inserted in center of cupcakes comes out clean, 15 to 20 minutes. Transfer to cooling racks and cool 10 minutes in tins. Set cupcakes directly onto racks and cool completely, about 1 hour.

Meanwhile, combine gelatin and water in a small bowl. Microwave until the gelatin dissolves, about 20 seconds. Cool to room temperature, about 5 minutes. Place remaining cream of coconut (about ¼ cup), cream cheese, confectioners’ sugar, remaining ½ teaspoon vanilla, and dissolved gelatin in the chilled bowl and whisk on medium speed until whippy, about 2 minutes. Add the cream and whisk just until thickened, about 2 minutes. Fold in coconut, pineapple, marshmallows, and mandarin wedges.

The North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) has often been termed ‘the Oscars of hairstyling’ and is quite possibly the most respected and significant competition for those in the fashion industry. Only the most ambitious and talented stylists enter NAH A, and only the upper echelon in the hair world get nominated, let alone win. Boston’s own Michael Albor, at The Loft Salon on Newbury Street, is one such stylist. He’s already been nominated seven previous times, having won once for Editorial. This year we are proud to once again congratulate Michael for his nomination in the Fashion Forward category along with Donna Hamilton, also at The Loft. He was also nominated for Hairstylist of the Year, becoming the only individual from New England ever to be nominated for that category.

Hairstylist of the Year

Michael credits collaborations with an amazing group of artists that he’s been fortunate enough to work with. Along with his stylists, he numbers our own Callista Wilson as an invaluable member of the team. Callista did the styling for both of the photo shoots that were nominated for NAHA this year. Her artistic vision for both of the shoots gave the story lines an extra level of authenticity and was pivotal to the construction of the pieces.Michael’s inspirations for the photo shoot that led to his Hairstylist of the Year, photographed by Connor Doherty, had a heavy basis on geometric shape paired with bold colors. The shoot that is nominated for Fashion Forward was photographed by Joel Benjamin, and began with a modernization on a turn of the century look, and focuses heavily on shape and form within hair.

Pixie

Here at The Loft, Donna, Katie and I are all really excited to be seeing more Pixies this season. It’s been around for a while, but this is a look that is constantly changing. Right now we are seeing Pixies with shorter hair on the sides and longer in the front. One of our favorite things about this look is how versatile and easy it is: it can be worn boyish and messy, chic and sexy, or anywhere in between. It can also be paired with a variety of different clothing styles. Below is a photo taken by Kara Kochalko, illustrating the ethereal beauty that a Pixie can create.

Megan Rodney, from Maggie Inc

This look is top on our list for a multitude of reasons, one of which is how easy it is to style, especially for the upcoming summer.
Donna’s tip: blow dry with a flat wrapping technique to keep hair closer to your head. Then blow dry with a round brush to give volume at crown for a sleek look. (use Biomega’s Behave smoothing elixir for best results)
Also, tousling your hair for a cute messy look is great for those mornings when you’re running late! :)
Michael’s tip: emulsify a pea sized amount Aquage Transforming Paste in your hands and run through your locks to enhance the looks texture, hit with a blow dryer to give the feel and look of convertible-blown hair. (Use Biomega’s Text Me to add texture, and for the ultimate effect add Shake It! to the Text Me.)
Another great perk is that any color looks fabulous with it! We are seeing a lot of platinum, as well as rosy chocolate browns this season.

Bob with Fringe

We’re also big fans of the bob with fringe this season. It has been around for a while, but we’re happy to announce that this year the bob has relaxed a bit. It’s shed its formerly severe look and now it’s taken a perfectly messy place in our hearts. The fringe is optional, but if you do opt for bangs, make sure the line is clear and blunt.

Michael’s Tip: When blow drying the classic bob, the best thing to use is a classic Denman brush, flat wrapping the hair around the circumference of the head until dry.

Donna’s tip: Blow dry with the Biomega Behave mixed with Shake It! to enhance texture, hold and movement.

Food Stylist Pam Sorin's Matzo Brei for Passover

ENNIS Food Stylist, Pam Sorin offers up her easy recipe for Matzo Brei:

Every year, I look forward to Passover. It’s my favorite Jewish holiday- and one reason is definitely the food. Unleavened bread, also known as matzo, has a multitude of uses, but without question, Matzo Brei is my favorite way to eat it. And it’s easy.

Break up 4 pieces of matzo into medium sized pieces. Soak the 4 pieces in warm water for 15 seconds. Drain well. Beat 2 eggs in a medium bowl and add the matzo pieces. If you want savory matzo brei, then add a liberal amount of salt and pepper.

Heat 2 tbs of oil in medium nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the egg-matzo mixture and sauté in until you have reached the desired doneness. I like mine crispy served with hot sauce. Some people prefer to serve it sweet with cinnamon-sugar or maple syrup.

Either way, you can’t go wrong.

Audrey says green concealer, in either cream or powder form, is the only way to truly get rid of real redness. For those with Rosacea or “high color" green concealer cancels out the redness allowing a more even skin tone. Apply the cream form under your foundation and apply the powder form(for oily/combination skin) over. If you are using treatment for Rosacea, that would go on the skin first.

Her go to product? Physician's Formula Green Cream Concealer (available at drugstores for less than $10 - can't beat that!).

Charlotte was flown to Greece with a Droga 5 team to create the old & new world versions of the traditional spreads of Greek fare featured in these fabulous spots: "I had a 'pinch me' moment when standing on top of a hill overlooking the Aegean Sea, the moon going down on one side, the sun coming up on the other, all set to the tune of Yiayia's goat bleating in the background."

Hero’s Among Us

In the current issue (2/7/11) of People magazine two Boston Natives and founders of Kids Clothes Club are featured in a column “Hero’s Among Us.” Faith Michaels and Elaine Shannon’s organization has helped to donated more than 900 winter coats to children in the area. A photo shoot for the column was held and Faith and Elaine invited eight children from The Home for Little Wanders to be a part of the special day.
